The United Mine Workers of America as an Exemplar of Union Activity

Upholding the Policies and Laws of the Organization

After considering the functions of keeping the union functioning on a basic level, an examination of what a union does needs to turn to its leadership in organizing the events that its members will participate in and how it upholds the rules it has set forth for employers and its own members. Of course, organizing strikes, boycotts, and demonstrations are the most publicly seen actions that a union takes; however, there are additional facets of the union organizing its members in action. The union also holds regular meetings at the local, district, and national levels for discussing updates to the policies it upholds, and third, the union upholds its contracts and laws in its own court of law.
