Embracing a Western Identity + The Jewish Oregon Story

Looking Outward

“On May 5, 1964, the Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Portland published a statement calling for the desegregation of Portland public schools. Endorsed by the Federation and by twelve member organizations including three congregations, the Oregon Board of Rabbis, and local chapters of Hadassah, the National Council of Jewish Women, B’nai B’rith, the American Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Committee, and the Jewish Labor Committee, the statement publicly declared that the vast majority of the Jewish community was unified on this controversial civic issue.” - Ellen Eisenberg
