The Adoration of the Kings: Why was this made, and how was it used?

Later in his life Corrado de’ Trinici, the lord of Foligno (Umbria, Italy), became a great supporter of the faction that supported the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor in Italy (the Ghibellines). As a result of this new partisanship, Trinici became a great admirer of the Catholic Church. The Lord of Foligno thus commissioned Ottaviano Nelli to create The Adoration of the Kings. The painting was made to adorn one of the lower walls in Trinici’s palace chapel at Foligno, and it hung beside some of Nelli’s other work, like The Presentation in the Temple.
