OLD Art in an Early Global World at WAM: A WAM/College of the Holy Cross Collaboration

How was this ewer made?

Erica Belden, Class of 2026, College of the Holy Cross

This ewer was made using earthenware clay fired at very high temperatures.  The earliest blast heat furnaces were made during the fifteenth century in Europe and had traveled to Southeast Asia by this object's time of creation.  Please check; the earliest blast furnaces were from China during the Han Dynasty. These furnaces could reach up to 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit.  During this period, the kilns were made of natural materials.  This ewer would have been decorated and glazed before firing.
