Composite Stechzeug - What does This Tell Us about the Medieval Globe?

Zachary Barney, Class of 2025, College of the Holy Cross

What the German Jousting armor tells us about the Medieval globe is that Europe was undergoing a transformation in the 15th and 16th centuries. The armor itself is the ultimate culmination of technology and safety in Medieval armories with its flexible joints, adjustable sightline, and different widths throughout the suit. Over the course of 500 years, Europeans were able to convert armed cavalry charges into tournament spectacles fit for nobles and knights to participate in without major threats of death that would have been a reality in the past. The jousting armor also shows the wealth and power the Holy Roman Empire still had over Europe in the Renaissance because of how the noble of Nuremberg was able to commission the creation of multiple jousting armor suits for their personal collection despite their cost.
