The Cu Chi Tunnnels of Vietnam

Conclusion

The men who fought within the tunnels are regarded as heroes in their own countries. A saying by Ho Chi Minh best describes the Vietnamese attitude about the war: “If the tiger ever stands still, the elephant will crush him with his mighty tusks. But the tiger will not stand still. He will leap upon the back of the elephant, tearing huge chunks from his side and then he will leap back into the dark jungle. And slowly the elephant will bleed to death. Such will be the war in Indochina” (Morrison xiii). The tunnels allowed the Viet Cong to stay mobile and out of reach of the American “elephant.”  After a decade of emerging from the tunnels to defeat the enemy forces, the Viet Cong forced the American military to surrender. The tunnels not only changed history, but have changed warfare throughout the world. The tunnels are a symbol of national pride for the Vietnamese people, but they also provide an opportunity for closure for many Americans.  For those with a thirst for history and who want to experience what it was like during the Vietnam War, the Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam are a must see
