The early Chinese immigrants in America

The story of Tyrus Wong

When Tyrus Wong first arrived in the United States, he was detained on the Angel island. Back then, only nine years old, the boy had to be separated from his father and lived in a cramped wooden house with dozens of strangers. According to Wong, he hated this place, because it was just like a prison for him. As a young child, Wong witnessed the under-privileged life in the Angel Island Immigration Station and how the Chinese immigrants suffered-- many people here were detained for more than two years, and some even committed suicide due to the hopeless and endless detention. What shocked me the most is that because there was nothing to entertain himself, Wong had to play with a piece of chewed chewing gum in order to kill time. However, years later, Wong considered his suffering in the "jail" worthwhile, for after his release,  he received education and became a leading artist in Disney animation studio, realizing his American dream. For Wong, he was quite grateful that he didn't give up hope when he was on the Angel Island, and the memory was somewhat bitter-sweet.
