The very first generation of Chinese immigrants, most of who worked as labors, arrived in American in the 1800s. They toiled in gold mines, railroad construction sites and laundries, doing exhausting and dangerous work in the U.S. Most of those Chinese immigrants came to America in the hope of having a better life.
