"Art in Modern Handcrafts"

Exhibition on Tour

After "Art in Modern Handcrafts" was hosted at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the show luckily received a grant to travel around the state of Pennsylvania. This tour went on for about a year, where the show was taken through the towns of Pennsylvania. Betty Raphael wanted to especially take this show to towns that had no art galleries. With the grant of $7,500, Raphael was assisted by Beth Walter, a close colleague that has been with her at "The Store".

The tour visited about twelve different towns in the state of Pennsylvania. The first show, hosted in Franklin PA, opened on February 20th and closed on March 9th. The YMCA at Otter and West Park hosted the exhibition. The next stop was in Loretto, Pennsylvania and was hosted at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. The next couple of shows were sponsored by the Northern Pennsylvania Arts Council. The exhibitions were held at the Denton Hill Ski Lodge in Coudersport, The New Milford Gallery in Lake Raylean, and the Lycoming Shopping Mall. Through the months of September until December, the show traveled to the Altoona Public Library, The Tyler School of Art (Ambler Campus), the Westmoreland Community College in Youngwood, and the Youngstown Community College.

Raphael documented crucial information regarding the organized schedule of the tour. She constructed a whole information packet containing, The State Sponsor contact, the Planning of the Show, Transporting the Show, Unpacking the Show, Installing the Show, Publicizing the Show, Orders and Sales, Repacking the Show, and several procedures regarding, posters, booklets, signs, and photographs. Additionally, her scrapbooks contained various pictures of the shows and kept all of the press that came out of this traveling exhibition. Raphael independently took on all of these roles and created a well-organized system. She was contributing to all of the areas needed to pull of this exhibition. This was all a complete success for her and she was able to establish her name in the art world.

The next two page will act as a "virtual tour" of the exhibition spaces at the CMOA. Betty Raphael developed floor plans for each of the gallery spaces and took pictures of each displayed object.
