Neatline from Bobbie's point of view

Went and visited http://neatline.org/, and I did read all about their projects, which included demos. I also played around their sandbox. The "demo" they provided was a map of VCU University. I looked around. In addition, I created my own one, HUMclass. I made it public so I hope any can visit it and comment on it. I tried to "identifies" personal sites of emotional importance, but had a hard time doing so.

As far as I can see, I feel this program needs to be a "side-note" or "side-bar" to a main article to which it is referring. In other words, I fell that each medium of communication (text, image, sound, etc.) has their strong points and their weak points of expression. Visual images can express ideas up to a point before another medium needs to come in and finish the expression. Likewise, words in a text can express certain ideas about a subject before it needs the help of a map or a voice to complete that idea. As far as I can tell, Neatline is a great tool, which is trying to make maps (imags) the central force. It is a great tool for individual who cannot express in words what an map can. On the other hand, I cannot see maps or visualization images taking over "text." .

I don't think that "mapping ODU from an experiential perspective" has changed the "official narrative of the University," yet. I feel that this is a very new medium, and we have not achieved its full potential. However, I feel Alberto Cairo, “Why Visualize,” The Functional Art, seen to address the important points of visualization. I feel that neatline might change the offical narrative of the University in a minor away. However, not in a "larger" sense.

Many things.express time and space (temporal and spatial) expressions, which are important to understand. These are ideas that have pondered thinks over the centuries. Temporal and spatial dimensions provide a framework in framing our environment. Maps like Neatline, help us make sense of the world, but do words.
