Beyond the Boundaries of Fantasia: An ancient imagining of the future of leadership

Election 2016: Playing the Gender Card

Donald Trump has accused Hillary Clinton of playing the "woman card" on numerous occasions, even going so far as to saying that it is the only reason she has been so successful thus far. Trump's critics have responded by pointing out just how much he plays the "man card", by talking about his penis size in the Republican debate, or comparing the attractiveness of his own wife Melania to that of his competitors. Kelly Dittmar, a contemporary political science and gender studies scholar, studies how both male and female political candidates leverage different aspects of gender identity in their campaign rhetoric, either to build up an image of themselves as leaders, or to attack an opponent's leadership qualifications: in other words, not playing the "woman card" or the "man card", but the "gender card"
