America: The Melting Pot of Good Cooking

These pages come from a much longer 1976 Better Homes and Gardens feature on diverse hyphenated-American cuisines. This issue featured Native American, Indian, and Chinese families, as well as the Jewish one in the images above. The Jewish family stands out in this context for their whiteness: they "look American" as opposed to the people of color also featured who cannot visibly assimilate into America as Jews did. But at the same time, that a Jewish family is categorized with racial others suggests that they are only considered somewhat white.
