The historic, scant and adept town quaintly nestled on the
peripheries of the CF&I Steel Mill in Pueblo CO is fondly dubbed by the
Pueblo community as Bessemer, and traces its roots back to 1886. The moniker
Bessemer was popular among American steel mill towns at the turn of the
century, and is an ardent homage to the English scientist and inventor Sir
Henry Bessemer, who ingeniously invented a method of decarbonizing steel which
allowed the steel to be made cheaper and faster.

As the town of Pueblo expanded Bessemer became integrated
and was converted into a neighborhood, which thrives in Pueblo and boasts the
same moniker to this day. The close proximity of the town made for an ideal
home for the CF&I laborers and their families. The majority of the Bessemer
residents however were immigrants of which had moved to the area to work in the
mines and mill. There was a substantial influx of hard-working immigrants that
traversed from a wide range of motherlands consisting of-- Mexico, Italy, Germany,
Asia, Eastern Europe, and many more.
