Enrique Castrejon
Enrique Castrejon is a 48 year-old Queer Mexican immigrant artist who creates measured drawings and installations to investigate and question what he sees. He linearly cuts, dissects, and deconstructs appropriated images into fragmented shapes while trying to maintain the original image content. He investigates how these shapes influence our visual perception, impact the content, and affect our understanding of it. He questions our perception of what is real, what is made up, and what is manipulated, forcing us to think critically about the information constantly bombarding our everyday lives through advertisements, news, and social media. He uses linear measurement as a language to describe what he sees and offers viewers an objective view through the ordered chaos.
Castrejon works as a Senior Research Coordinator at the LA LGBT Center for a research study called mSTUDY that is looking at the effects of drug use on the immune system of HIV positive Black and Latino men who have sex with men. He enjoys working within the LGBTQ community while balancing an art career. His work has been shown in galleries and museums in Los Angeles, including the Armory Center of the Arts, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), LA Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park, and Highway’s Performance Space. Nationally and internationally, his work has been shown at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in NY, the Mexican Institute, Washington, DC, the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City, and Preview Art Fair in Berlin, Germany. He is a recipient of a COLA 2019 Individual Artist Fellowship grant from the City of Los Angeles. He received his MFA from CalARTS, BFA from ArtCenter College of Art & Design, and a B.A. in Chicano/a Studies from Cal State Northridge. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
