Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

scalar (adj.)
having an uninterrupted series of steps
capable of being represented by a point on a scale
of or relating to a scalar or scalar product
scalar (noun)
a real number rather than a vector
a quantity (such as mass or time) that has a magnitude describable by a real number and no direction
Scalar is an online publishing platform, created by the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture, that provides the opportunity for academics, students, librarians, museum curators, and archivists, among many others, to self-publish scholarly works.
Scalar allows for linear “pathways” and non-linear “tags” to be made between and among sections of a publication for natural reading as well as the ability to go back and forth and around, as you might if you had a book in your hand. Scalar encourages and highlights the use of media to create a rich, multi-dimensional piece of work. The platform permits collaboration between users as well as interactive use and feedback from readers. Additionally, Scalar projects can range from shorter essays to larger book projects, using simple technology that will not overwhelm the less tech-savvy among us.
