Homer

The Iliad and the Odyssey are attributed to Homer. Many generations of scholars have disagreed about nearly every personal detail related to the name "Homer." Suffice to say that in this class, English poets conceived of Homer as the blind (male) bard who sang epic poetry with the aid of the muses.

VirgilPetrarchSpenser, and Milton each tried to imitate the epic conventions established by the Iliad. For the most part, these poets invoked the muses, began in medias res, and depicted the relationship between a hero and a society. Milton modeled his later persona on Homer, especially on the basis of their shared blindness.
