Safer at Home: Exploring the ONE Archives Collection

Contemporary Artists

Safer at Home has two components. The first is this online exhibition of archival objects selected from the ONE Archives collection that respond to the idea of “safer at home.” The second is to feature artists and their works of art that respond to the idea of "safer at home." I have invited four LA-based LGBTQ artists of color to share their work and reflect on how this terminology, the impact of Covid-19, and the recent protests against police brutality have affected their daily lives and art practice. These half-hour conversations are conducted live for anyone who would like to listen live, and then the recordings are posted on the website for later viewing. Because I cannot access the Archives in person, I am restricted to selecting materials from our online digital archive, which is only a fraction of our holdings. Inviting contemporary artists to share their own work and voices is one way to I have tried to counterbalance this restriction.

This on-line exhibition of archival materials and contemporary art will debut after movement restrictions have been lifted. The multi-pronged and phased approach stems from my desire to generate new ideas and material right now, while also planning for and envisioning another way of gathering when it is possible to meet again in person.
