Ruth Elder Remembered

Flaming Ruth

Ruth Elder's flight attracted enough attention to be epitomized into song. Arthur Field's "Flaming Ruth" was recorded on December 23, 1927, a little over a month after she was welcomed back in America. The song refers to her as "a sister to Lindy" (Charles Lindbergh)  and "our Yankee Joan of Arc." It goes on to valorize her flight and commend her for her bravery, claiming that she is now "within the Hall of Fame." As a whole, the song attests to her notoriety in American culture, as well as the spectacle of early female aviation.
