Traversal of Myst

This Traversal of the popular 1990s game Myst took place on Thursday, June 6, 2019 during the Digital Humanities Summer Institute's course, Retro Machines & Media. It features members of the class collaborating to solve the game's puzzles. One member, Jeff Lawler, facilitated the player movement throughout the game. It his voice you hear. Providing him with hints are Tiffany Knoell and Sean Smith. Their voices are also featured in some of the clips.

Myst Traversal  Part 1
This video clip shows the game, Myst, booting up and displaying its opening title sequence.

Myst Traversal  Part 2
In this clip the players begin the game by exploring the various sites on the island.

Myst Traversal  Part 3
The players move back to the island’s dock and the process of finding clues for solving the game’s puzzle.

Myst Traversal  Part 4
The players visit the library and find books, the map of the island, and the secret passage.

Myst Traversal  Part 5
In the secret passage, the players begin interacting with the various objects in the rooms, before returning to the library and inspecting the books more closely.

Myst Traversal  Part 6
The players continue to inspect the books and noting clues that may help them solve the puzzle.

Myst Traversal  Part 7
Finishing their exploration of the books, the players review the map before heading to the spaceship and other locations on the island.

Myst Traversal  Part 8
The players find the building where the power supplying the electricity to the island is located.

Myst Traversal  Part 9
Realizing that they missed some clues, the players return to the pool and unlock its holograms that allow them to control the direction the tower can be moved.

Myst Traversal  Part 10
The players use the clues to manipulate the tower’s levers, which they found to be very tricky to do.

Myst Traversal  Part 11
Having solved the challenge of the tower, the players return to the gear and find the book that transports them to a new Age.
