Recipes Resurrected : North Carolina Culinary Treasures from the Archive

Selected Piedmont Recipes

The above gallery is a small selection of recipes by organizations and families across Central North Carolina sourced from the Southern Historical and North Carolina Collections at UNC-Chapel Hill's Wilson Library. Ranging from 19th-century manuscripts to cookbooks from just 50 years ago, these recipes showcase the breadth of Piedmont foodways through time. Some images intentionally include multiple recipes for the same dish, showing the popularity of particular recipes and variations between families. On some pages, splatters and stains help display the materiality of cookbooks and their role in the physical manifestations of foodways. These resources, while just a sample, illustrate how recipes can be used as primary sources to teach historical food traditions and practices.
