1795 Pointe Coupee Conspiracy

The Testimony of Petit Pierre

Petit Pierre (slave of Mr. Charles Duffour) said (while being interrogated), that he was home in his cabin when a man named J. Baptiste (a slave of widow Lacour) came to his home and asked him to step outside to the road. J. Baptiste wanted to know if Petit Pierre knew he was a free man. He responded to Baptiste saying that he didn’t care to be free, that both of his parents were slaves and none of them had any money to buy their freedom.

While on the road an older slave named, Charlot (owned by Mr. L Riche) overheard their conversation and asked J. Baptiste why he thought he was a free man. The men then “dispersed” and Petit Pierre went back into his home.
