The Grit and Glamour of Queer LA Subculture

Emily's Sassy Lime

Originating in southern California in 1993, Emily's Sassy Lime formed when Wendy and Amy Yao and Emily Ryan snuck out of their parents' houses in high school to see Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. Because they were still in high school, the trio had to continuously sneak out to practice, write songs over the phone, record with low quality tape recorders, and borrow instruments from other musicians to perform. Although the band broke up after they graduated high school in 1997, they truly embodied the DIY spirit of punk. While all three have been relatively active in the early 2000s, Wendy Yao owns an indie-punk artist space in Chinatown, Los Angeles.

Additionally, no lyrics are available for Emily's Sassy Lime's songs, but their music can be found here and to the right.
