University of Southern Colorado Sports

In 19723Southern Colorado State College became, University of Southern Colorado, finally getting the title of an accredited University. With the change of name also came the beginning of women's college athletics in Pueblo.

The Volleyball team at University of Southern Colorado started in 1978 and played in the RMAC along with all other sports teams at the University. In 1981 the team won the eastern division, and in 1996 and 1997 the volleyball team took home the title of RMAC champions.

The women's basketball team at USC had many winning seasons, but unfortunately was never able to bring home an RMAC championship. The closest the team got to winning the Conference was in 1981 when the team was the eastern division champions, but unfortunately went on to lose the conference championship game.

The tennis team had a strong early couple of years. In 1981 the team won both the RMAC championship, and also the Region 7 Championship. In 1983 the team again won the RMAC championship, and was given a berth to the NAIA tournament.

The gymnastics team at USC was unstoppable in the early 80's winning championship after championship. The team won the RMAC championship in 1981, 1982, 1983, and 1984. Along with the conference championships, the team also took third place in the NAIA national meet.

The women's track team, along with many other women's teams, won the RMAC championship in 1981 and also was given a berth to the NAIA national meet.

Women's soccer started at USC in 1994. Unfortunately the team was unable to bring home in conference championships throughout their career, but did show off some winning seasons and gave soccer enthusiasts some good games to watch in Pueblo.

The men's basketball team at USC came out of the gates swinging. The team took home the outright title of RMAC champions in 1973 and 1974. Then after a dry spell in the 80's, the team got it back together with a shared title of the RMAC championship in both 1994 and 1996, and an outright championship again in 1998.

After not winning a championship in collegiate football in Pueblo for a very long time, the football team at USC changed that in 1981. In 1981 the team shared the title of RMAC champions with Adams State.

The baseball team continued at USC, still playing at Runyon field. The team won RMAC championships in 1980, 1994, 1996, 2001, and 2002.

The men's track squad at USC was able to bring home a RMAC championship in 1983. The team also hosted many entertaining home meets along with the female track team at USC.

In 1989 Soccer started at USC. This was the first time that the city of Pueblo had the opportunity to experience collegiate soccer. The soccer team sported many winning seasons, and a ton of great games, including an RMAC championship in 1999.

In 1983 the wrestling program started at USC sending two wrestlers to the NAIA national tournament. It didn't take the wrestling program long to hit their stride, winning their first RMAC championship in 1984. The team took second place at the NAIA national tournament two times, first in 1985, then again in 1991. In 1988 the team was undefeated.

Wrestling RMAC championships: 84, 85, 88, 91, 93, 98, 99
