Poetry Through Rap

Inspiration to Excite Before You Start to Write

Kendrick Lamar can be viewed as more than just a rapper or MC, but as a writer, an author, and someone who creates literature. By dissecting song lyrics, album covers, and artist histories you have the opportunity to discover stories of sexism or racial differences in an expressive and creative format. You may identify with ideas in the following videos and find inspiration for creating your own piece.

Pay attention to the difference between Drake and Lil Wayne’s writing process. Find comfort in the idea that you and your peers may construct your raps differently. Pay attention to what inspires them.

Take note of the purpose behind why Kanye wrote his rap lyrics for Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Also, notice that he knew he needed to spend more than just 5 minutes to write the lyrics of, "Power." Remember to be patient when you write.

Eminem looks at his raps as puzzles that he pieces together throughout the process. Consider this idea when writing. You can add and move words around in lines until you feel they flow the best.

Soak in what you just heard
And play with any word you like
It doesn’t make you a nerd
Get some ideas on the page
like tortillas being made into burritos
just a draft you can veto
later on.  I know my raps are lame
but don’t go aimin’ shame at my name
when I’m trying to change the game
from poetry to rap
so in class you won’t wanna nap
instead tap, clap, and snap to the beat of education
playing with dictation where before you know it you’ll be a poet
Just have fun we’ve just begun
Pretty soon you’ll be impressin’ everyone!
