"Poetry for the People": Reading Garveyism through Poetry

shackled hand

An oft-quoted Bible verse throughout the Garvey movement is Psalm 68:31, which reads: "Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God" (KJV). "Ethiopia" is taken to mean Africa and African-descended peoples. The line signifies that Africa is trying to "stretch out her hands" but is "shackled" and therefore prevented from doing so. It is the mission of the U.N.I.A. to remove those shackles, whether literal or symbolic.
