Garvey advocated a "return" to Africa, for those whose ancestors had been taken from there by force through enslavement. This was a debated topic, however, since those in diaspora sometimes felt that they belonged more to the land they had always known (the Caribbean or the Americas) and felt they had a right to stay and prosper from the nations their ancestors built through their (forced) labor.
