"Poetry for the People": Reading Garveyism through Poetry

mother country

Since this poem is dedicated to Marcus Garvey, one might guess that "mother country" would refer to his homeland of Jamaica. However, the reference to a "free" country marked by a "rising star" makes it clear that the lines refer to Ethiopia. Ethiopia was led by Emperor Haile Selassie (also known as Ras Tafari), who was influenced by Garvey and the push for black power and race unity. The flag which marked this era of Ethiopian independence and modernization featured a star in the center.
