Paper Titles and Panelist Biographies:

From Page to Screen: A New Look at Piranesi's Annotated Images (Jeanne Britton)
Jeanne Britton is a Curator in the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, affiliate faculty in English, and core faculty in Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina. Her background is in Comparative Literature, and she has specialized in British and French literature and culture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. She is am the lead PI on “The Digital Piranesi.” Her book, Vicarious Narratives: A Literary History of Sympathy, 1750-1850, appeared with Oxford in 2019.

Piranesi and the Diagrammatic Sublime (Mike Gavin)
Mike Gavin is Associate Professor of English at the University of South Carolina.  He writes and teaches about literature, intellectual history, and digital humanities. He is interested in the ways that technology affects communication. His current research investigates how new forms of digital writing and computational analysis make possible new ways of thinking about language and history.

The Digital Piranesi: New Approaches to Translating the Opere (Zoe Langer)
Zoe Langer is currently the Postdoctoral Fellow in the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. She received her Ph.D. in Italian Studies from Brown University with a dissertation, “Dante’s Printed Afterlives: Authorship, Authority, and the Early Modern Book (1500-1800),” that provides the first in-depth account of the reception of the Commedia in Italian editorial and visual culture. Her interests include special collections librarianship, translation studies, early modern visual culture, the relationship between literature and cartography, book history, and the history of authorship.

The Virtual Piranesi (Jason Porter)
Jason Porter is an Instructor of Visual Communications in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina. He has a B.S. in Media Arts and Animation from the Art Institute of California - San Francisco and a Master’s in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina. His research is in the development of interactive literacies and our relationship with interactive technology. Porter is an award-winning animator and designer, having helped brands such as Disney, Marvel, and Volkswagen tell interactive and visually engaging stories across a variety of media channels.
