The Digital Piranesi

Ornamental motifs

Fragments of an entablature with Egyptian motifs at the top cornice reveals Piranesi's adherence to the philosopher Giambattista Vico's ideas on the origins of Italic civilization. Vico postulated that the “true stone architecture” remotely descended from a lineage that came from the East and followed to Egyptians and then Etruscans, which means the exclusion of Greece on the formation of ancient Rome.
