Perfecting Eloquence: Jesuit Pedagogy in the First-Year Writing Classroom

How to use this exercise

Unlike the other assignments in this sequence, "A Writer's Examen" is meant to serve as an ungraded, uncollected exercise. You could ask students to do it as a group in the classroom, however, you may find it more effective for them to complete it at their own pace, in the time and location that are most comfortable for them.

You can do this exercise as many or as few times as you find appropriate. It is modeled after a daily practice, but asking students to do this every day could be overly rigorous for students who are unaccustomed to daily contemplative practices. One recommendation is that you ask students to do it six times throughout the semester: once in the first week of the course, after each of the four major assignments, and once at the end of the course.

Moreover, while it is designed for students to reflect on their free writing, one could alter it to reflect upon the previous major assignment, or some other past piece of writing. In this case, you may want to ask students to take notes on their experience of writing during the writing process, rather than rely on their memory alone after the fact.
