Beth's death
...
Beth's strength teeters between enough to move her head from side to side, to keeping her eyes from closing no longer than what accounts for a single blink. She lets her fingers and toes dissolve into the surrounding foliage.
"Abbie...hel................elp..."
Staring at the darkening sky, she watches specters of herself and Abbie finding each other on a nearby planet, far away from the present. She is a phantom of herself, arms becoming twigs, feet becoming stones, ribs becoming caves, her head becoming the top of a rising plateau. Fading between both realities she feels her tears slowly spilling over gullies that are her emaciated eye sockets, down the side of her cheekbones into the pockets of her ears, dulling the sound of her own breath.
Deep breathe in......shallow out.
She knows it's cold and slightly dewy, but she only feels a warmth. Memory and imagined world merge, as she curls up by the wood stove reading "Hatchet" aloud, Abbie wraps her arms around her and caresses Beth's hair.
Tears stop, a short gasp escapes.
