Abbie's loss

***

"It's harder and harder to remember a time when I wasn't food. The coyotes, wolves, bears, cougars, vultures, wild dogs..."

There is a tree in differing parts of the world called the strangler fig. It attaches itself to a larger tree in order to climb up into the canopy. As decades pass the roots wrap around and overwhelm the support tree. There is a moment when they are so entwined they become indistinguishable from each other. It is said at this moment they share the light, the earth, the water, and the air equally.

Unfortunately, that moment passes quickly. The strangler fig eventually kills its host. Once the host's core rots and falls away, the Strangler Fig is on its own.

...only the memory of their union, a hollow rib cage of interlocking roots stretching from canopy to earth, remains. From that moment on the strangler fig struggles to fill the emptiness, but being a parasite and not a tree, the scar never heals.
