Lecture 1 Objectives

•    Understand basic atomic properties.
•    Define and recognize the different atomic orbitals and assemble accurate electron configurations.
•    Understand how atomic orbitals are used to make bonds using Valence Bond Theory.
•    Explain the limitations of Valence Bond Theory.
•    Understand how atomic orbitals combine to make molecular orbitals using Molecular Orbital (MO) Theory.
•    Draw MO diagrams of any first row diatomic and assess bond order and molecular stability.
