About

The Nikos Samartzidis Collection consists of paintings inscribed with Greek and English poetry in the Linear B script. This Greek poetry has been transformed by Samartzidis from modern Greek into Linear B. The collection is housed at the Program of Aegean Scripts and Prehistory at the University of Texas in Austin.

Biography

Nikos Samartzidis was born in northern Greece and now lives in Germany. He has a lifetime of experience with painting. In them, he explores themes of forgotten languages like Linear B and the traditions of Greek bardic poetry. He was introduced to Linear B on the island of Crete.

Outline

This Scalar exhibit presents the paintings of Samartzidis with their translations from Linear B to Greek and English. It also presents some brief remarks on thematic and poetic contexts which he works.

We will provide a brief overview of Linear B's discovery and decipherment, and also offer a provide a guide on translating the paintings from Linear B to Greek to English.
