The Nikos Samartzidis Collection consists of paintings inscribed with poetry in the Linear B script. This Greek poetry has been transformed by Samartzidis from modern Greek into Linear B. The collection is housed at the Program of Aegean Scripts and Prehistory at the University of Texas in Austin.

Biography

Nikos Samartzidis was born in northern Greece and now lives in Germany. He has a lifetime experience of painting. In his paintings he explores themes of Greek bardic poetry, forgotten languages like Linear B. He was introduced to Linear B on the island of Crete.

Outline

This presentation presents the paintings of Samartzidis in thematic and stylistic contexts. We will provide a brief overview of Linear B's discovery and decipherment, and also offer a provide a guide on translating the paintings from Linear B to Greek to English.
