Music Notation and Innovation

Vlatava (The Moldau)

At the end of the semester one of our last assignments was to analyze, Vlatava from the work Má Vlast composed by Bedrich Smetana. We were given liberty to analyze the piece and write an essay that described our idea of a visualization for the music.

My overall concept involved combining our method from our class project with idea based on the Beethoven visualization example.  So I drew a yellow zig-zag shaped line to start the piece off in the key of e minor and each time the key of the piece changed I would change the color of the line based where the color was represented on the color wheel.

For instance, towards the end of the piece the key changes from e minor to E major. Since E major and e minor are direct opposites (they share the same name yet one is happy and the other is sad) the color of the zig zag line would change from yellow to purple since the two are opposite each other on the color wheel. And the chord between the two keys which transitions the piece from major to minor is represented by a red-orange zig-zig line because red-orange is the median color between both keys.
