Tommie Smith

Tommie Smith was a runner for the USA Olympic team in 1968. He ran the 200- meter dash and broke, for the first time in history, the 20 second barrier, running a 19.83. Standing to his right is John Carlos, another 200- meter USA runner, winning bronze. Tommie wears a black scarf to represent black pride in a heightened time of the Civil Rights Movements.
