Museum of Resistance and Resilience

On 77 Cents

With "77 Cents", it is easy to focus on and solely walk away with the idea that females deserve and need more safe spaces within entertainment, especially in comedy. However, underneath the surface, the mechanism that helped convey such a message is the formatting of the showcase adopted by Abigail and other producers on the project. Since it was a showcase that contained both stand-up and improv segments, this resulted in a fun and lighthearted atmosphere – the medium was not explicitly forcing their audience to consider heavy-hitting statistics of women in comedy or the dark side of the entertainment industry, instead it relaxed their viewers to prime them for a full appreciation of the content each performer had to offer. This medium is transformative because it allows viewers to form their own takeaways; simultaneously, it was resistant by making it difficult for unsupportive groups to create an effective argument against such a fun showcase, and it remained resilient against possible technical mistakes during the show because of its spontaneous nature. As Abigail summed up in her interview, “the best art is free-flowing – it won’t be confined by any expectations or boundaries, instead it is allowed to simply exist. And I think that’s beautiful”.
