National School Walkout

As my interview video was reaching six minutes long, I had to cut out some of Selena and Sarah’s responses, in which one of them was an answer to my question “what were some of the most memorable moments from your time in Intersections.” I felt that this anecdote was too valuable to cut out from the project so I am dedicating this section here for it:

As a result of the Stoneman Douglas high school shooting, Intersections organized for the students at Lynbrook high school to participate in the National School Walkout for gun control. The event took place during school hours in the campus quad with memorials for the 17 victims, student speakers, one of whom was Selena herself, and other community leaders. Intersections officers also set up laptops for students to pre-register to vote. At the end of the event, students observed 17 seconds of silence to commemorate the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting before singing “This Little Light of Mine.”
In my interview with Selena and Sarah, Selena mentioned that this event was incredibly memorable “because we achieved something that we didn’t even know was possible within our scope. There were 400-500 high school students in the courtyard listening to speeches by students, community leaders like council member Chappie Jones, and others. This event surprised me because you would never expect a group of high schoolers to create something that big.”

Furthermore, Sarah discloses that “the walkout was done without any school administration involved or approval. Intersections led it but so many others donated posters, flowers, and whatnot and that's why it was so special. It really was a student grassroot event; it came from us, not someone who was trying to do a resume building thing.”

Below are some pictures from the walkout and screenshots of news articles about the event:
