Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera

This photo was taken at a rally for gay rights in 1973. Marsha P Johnson (right) and Sylvia Rivera (left), both transgender activists, pioneered the gay liberation movement. Here they stand in front of New York’s city council in protest for gay rights and together they stand in solidarity with all the other lives affected by this injustice. This iconic photograph shows strong women fighting for their rights but also ties into our overall theme of unity. As they stand there, they stand united with all the people who have suffered from gay injustice and continue, even after death, to be figures of freedom and strength.
