This article is modeled after Mark Twain's “How I Edited an Agricultural Paper Once" which originally appeared in the "Memoranda" section of the July 1870 issue of The Galaxy and was subsequently republished, with illustrations, as "How I [Once] Edited an Agricultural Paper" in the 1875 collection Sketches, New and Old. The author of this German version closely follows the original's structure but changes the "agricultural paper" to a magazine for young housewives. The topics of discussion (and resulting misinformation) are childcare, fashion, cooking, and marriage advice.
The text is presented as "loosely adapted from a story by Mark Twain" ("frei nach Mark Twain"). It had previously appeared on March 14, 1886, in the Sunday supplement to the Halle'sches Tageblatt (Halle/Saale, Germany) under the byline of "Julian Weiß," a writer and journalist in Timișoara (Temesvár), Vienna and Budapest. There, it had been labeled "Sehr frei nach Mark Twain" (very loosely based on Mark Twain)," together with the warning "Nachdruck verboten" (reprinting prohibited).
