A large number of writers, publishers and others interested in this question were present. Dr. Crosby, speaking on behalf of the American Publishers League, said that the question of protecting the foreign writer in this country had absolutely nothing to do with protective tariffs and free trade. Other countries, he said, were more liberal and fairer in this than the United States. The well-known humorist Mark Twain expressed the same opinions.
