| Scherzweise hat Mark Twain sich als Präsidentschafts-Candidat angemeldet. Es wäre nicht so übel, wenn ihn das Volk im Ernst bei dem Worte nehmen könnte. Eine Platform brauchte er nicht, die liegt in seinen Werken und dem liebenswürdigen, gediegenen Charakter, der aus denselben spricht. Der göttliche Humor freilich würde ihm wohl ausgehen in der Wirrniß des politischen Getriebes, in welchem die schnöde Selbstsucht die patriotischen Regungen in die Aschenbrödelecke schiebt, aber die noble Gesinnung würde bleiben und die gesunde Lebensphilosophie, die wie ein frischer Wind durch die dürren Blätter führe. Der Gedanke allein schon ist herzerquickend, aber die politischen Centurionen schlagen ihm die Thüre vor der Nase zu. Er hat keine Einlaßkarte zu den Fabriksälen der Maschinerie. | Jokingly, Mark Twain has announced himself as a presidential candidate. It would not be so bad if the people would be able to take him at his word. He would not need a platform, because it lies in his works and the amiable, solid character that speaks from them. The divine humor would certainly be lost to him in the confusion of the political hustle and bustle, in which disdainful selfishness pushes any patriotic impulses into the back corner; but the noble attitude would remain and the healthy philosophy of life, which would blow like a fresh wind through dry leaves. The thought alone is heart-warming, but the political centurions slam the door in his face. He has no admission ticket to the factory halls of this machinery. |
