„Mark Twain“ bestellte sich telegraphisch beim Schatzamt, da die Kohlen zu theuer seien, „45 Tonnen beste alte, trockene Regierungsbonds, 12 Tonnen alte Greenbacks passend für Heiz- und Kochöfen, sowie 7 Faß Post-Courant verwendbar zum Feuera[n]machen.“ Er versprach, daß er für die Freundlichkeit „richtig stimmen“ wird.Since coal was too expensive, “Mark Twain” telegraphed the Treasury to order “45 tons of best old dry government bonds, 12 tons of old greenbacks suitable for heating and cooking stoves, and 7 barrels of post-courant usable as kindling.” He promised that - for the kindness - he would “vote correctly”.
