| In Washington, wo die Stammbaumseuche schon seit Jahren gewüthet hat, ist jetzt die Wappenseuche ausgebrochen. Vor etwa fünfzehn Jahren verhöhnte Mark Twain die Stammbaum-Narrethei dadurch, daß er eine launige Geschichte über seine Abstammung von einem Raubritter schrieb und dieselbe mit einem Galgen als seinem Stammbaum, der Winters und Sommers Früchte trug , illustrirte; er kann dieses Werk jetzt verbessern. | In Washington, where the “family tree frenzy” has been raging for years, there is now an outbreak of the “heraldic frenzy”. About fifteen years ago, Mark Twain mocked the folly of family trees by writing a whimsical story about being the descendant of a robber baron and illustrating this work with a gallows as his family tree, which would bear fruit in winter and summer; he can now improve on that work. |
