Vision for the project

This project is as personal as it is academic. When I proposed conducting an oral history project in Bulgaria, I knew that I wanted to explore the questions that I had always been asking myself and others every time I would visit Bulgaria during vacations. Being in college and focusing on a specific project, I felt that I could return to Bulgaria and develop a deeper understanding.

At first, the scope of my research question was broad. I was interested in studying memory between generations. I was interested in seeing how the tumultuous period following the 1990 democratization had affected how the younger generation remembered the past and interpreted their parents' and grandparents' narratives.

Later when I arrived in Bulgaria, my focus shifted. I met up with Dimitar from the Institute for Studies of the Recent Past, which is an organization that has been conducting, publishing, and archiving oral histories about Bulgaria since 2005. After talking with Dimitar, he helped me narrow my focus to my hometown of Sopot, Bulgaria and the arms production plant that is the town's main industry, the Vazov Machine Works (VMZ in Bulgarian, Вазовски Машиностроителен Завод). 

While I had grown up hearing a lot about the plant, and having parents, grandparents, and uncles who all worked there, I didn't understand neither what it was nor its significance. Through the research of this project and the interviews with past VMZ workers and supervisors, the history and important role of VMZ became clearer. But what also became clearer were people's personal connections to the plant, their lived experiences of working and socializing in this environment over the course of many years of their life. The audio interviews hosted here show that personal connection, while the different pages divided by topic try to explore the larger themes that emerged from individual interviews and from the research.

Този проект е толкова личен, колкото е академичен. Когато предложих идеята за проект по устна история в България, знаех че исках да проуча въпросите които съм се питала поред години като посещавам България през летните ваканции. Тъй като сега бях студент, надявах се да мога да се завърна в България и да развия по-дълбоко знание за част на историята на моята държава.

В началото, обхвата на изследването беше широк. Интересувах се в как се предават спомени и колективна “памет” между поколенията. Интересуваше ме как бурният период след демократизацията в 1990 г. бе засегнал начина по който младото поколение си спомня за миналото.

Обаче когато пристигнах в България, фокусa ми се измени. Срещнах се с Димитър от Института за Изследване на Близкото Минало--организация която от 2005 г. провежда и публикува интервюта по устна истории.  След разговора ни, той ми помогна да стесним фокусa ми към родния ми град Сопот, по тема на оръжейният завод ВМЗ-Сопот, който е основният източник на работа в града.

Израствайки в Сопот аз бях чувала много за завода, и въпреки че имам родители, баби, дядовци, и чичовци, които всички са работили там, все още не разбирах на пълно неговата значителност. Чрез интервютата с работниците от ВМЗ, историята и важната роля на ВМЗ станаха по-ясни. Но също така стана ясно че хората имат много лични връзки към завода, и много спомени от общуването с колеги в течение на годините.

Аудио записите точно това показват. Докато уеб-страниците са разделени по тема се опитват да обяснят по-големите тенденции които се появиха от единичните интервюта.
