8. Hattie Wyatt Caraway: Jonesboro, AR Hattie Wyatt Caraway was the first woman elected to the Senate, and we are especially proud that she lived in Jonesboro. Her husband passed away while in office and the custom at the time was to temporarily appoint the widow to the position. Hattie decided to run for special election and won the seat. Caraway Rd. in Jonesboro is named after she and her husband Thaddeus, and we are very proud to share their names. Also please enjoy this quote when reporters will call her "Grandmother Hattie" who "sat quietly and did nothing" and she said "I wouldn't want to take a minute away from the men. Murasaki Shikibu: Northern Japan Murasaki Shikibu (Lady Shikibu) was born in the late tenth century and wrote a collection of 128 poems, her diary autobiography, and the first novel: The Tale of Genji, which details the trials and romantic life of an emperor's son that was forced to leave the palace in exile. Shikibu wrote the work chapter by chapter, delivering it to the noble women ahead of her position as a lady-in-waiting to entertain them.
