Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

A contemporary dance choreographer is the directors of dance in charge of making the decisions upon every matter included in her or his creation. On many occasions, the choreographer is the producer, the manager and even one of the dancers. Mark Tompkins is a dance teacher, artist, and choreographer. He enjoys working as a performer, choreographer, and pedagogue.
As a dancer, his aim is to create a work inspired by corporal language and music and using it without losing the natural character and dramaturgy of the traditional dance. Mark Tompkins sees dance as a tool for discovering, developing, expressing and connecting to ourselves, our environment and others, to strengthen communication, cooperation, and creativity, to foster change and healing. His works are built on highly physical contemporary dance and she collaborates with distinguished artists in the fields of visual art and sound in order to create worlds which shake emotions and activate your kinesthetic empathy. His dance has an aesthetical, conceptual research where he uses narrative discourses and metaphors. Tompkins expects dancers to produce honest movement, free of stereotypes and based on emotions or feelings. When this doesn’t happen, he stops and explores more.
Considering that the most popular concert dance form in the world might be ballet, he understands the existence of this general misconception. But, as our site’s main interest is contemporary dance, he decided to write a short reflection related to the topic. Dance choreographers create original dances and develop new interpretations of existing dances. The works of choreographers highlight the extent of their love of and devotion to their particular styles of dance. Dance has no boundaries, especially a modern dance, which can be seen as a game. It is a style, one form that is boundless, where it is all permitted at all times.
Mark Tompkins’ work is the art of inventing or arranging movement, as well as choosing dramatic structures to organize it or present it to an audience. The art of choreography itself is concerned about movement alone before its relationship with costumes, lightning or any other scenic compliments.
When creating, he takes on an experience, so he is more interested in the human being than in the dancer. Although the technique isn’t his main worry, he still tries to make use of their natural conditions. Mark Tompkins believes that every dancer has something to give. To him, the most important aspect of the whole situation is the thing that makes the dancer move and not how he moves.
