Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Since he was young, Mark Tompkins brought the idea of theater plays mixed with dances to school, for his friends to see. Young Mark was fascinated by dances. But, initially his classmates were somewhat resistant of his idea of modern dances and everything he had to say, until he started being supported by professional dance artists. Now he is the author of a book named Mark Tompkins SEC Song and Dance.
Everything started when he moved to Paris, where he developed his dance skills and collaborated with experienced dancers, asking for advice on how to be better and how to start with dance studies despite the his regular school classes. Experts from France shared that young Mark was very energetic and very collaborative, so it was relatively easy for them to connect with Mark. The media in the late 90’s was interested in his story, and that was the moment of his greatest fame. There, he explained how experts helped him develop his own unique style of dancing. He also said that the modern Latin dances like salsa, mambo, rumba, bomba, meringue and bachata are his favorites. He even converted his best friend into modern dances, since he initially disliked the idea. Tompkins points out that the message he sent with his book will help young dance enthusiasts understand how much the (ever-dying) dances mean to the culture of an individual, and ultimately, what they mean to the world.
Since early 2000's, Tompkins had greater confidence in following her passion. In addition, he succeeded in changing the view modern theater shows. Mark says that now he and his team (of professional dancers and former colleagues of work) are developing a new type of dance. When they find a dance from exploring different culture, they bring it to the theater for evaluation. He believes that other dance artists will probably want to read his book and study new dances.
