Race

A commonplace criticism against Mary Seacole's merits is that she did not understand herself to be Black and opted instead for the term "yellow" ("Mary Seacole and Claims" McDonald 7). However, being yellow in the 19th century did not mean being exempted from racism and it did not reflect what Seacole thought of Creole's or Black's.
